This morning, two 5G pilot projects led by Parlem Telecom received the prestigious GSMA Foundry Excellence Award at the Mobile World Congress, which opened today at the Gran Via enclosure in Fira de Barcelona. These simulations demonstrated the feasibility of 5G technology, one to improve self-driving safety and the other to enhance the experience of online real-time and augmented reality purchases, which was carried out at the Boqueria Market. Both pilot tests, led by Parlem, are part of the 5G Catalunya Pilot program, which was assigned to a UTE of eight companies by Red.es.

The GSMA has recognized this pilot program, which has developed seven 5G technology use cases through a company consortium led by Cellnex and Grupo Masmovil, together with Parlem Telecom, Lenovo, Nae, Nearby Computing, Atos, and Aumenta Solutions. The goal is to deploy solutions based on 5G technology throughout the Barcelona area to achieve the digital transformation of the city and metropolitan area for the benefit of citizens, public administrations, and the private sector. The seven use cases are related specifically to urban mobility, education, distance shopping, the industrial sector, audiovisual transmission, management of security and emergencies in the urban environment, and connectivity to high-occupation seasonal areas, such as the beaches of the coastline. The manager of GSMA Foundry, Richard Cockle, has noted that all developed use cases are “remarkable and show the benefits of 5G technology in real life.”

Parlem Telecom is highlighting a sample of its autonomous mobility pilot on its stand at this year’s MWC. Visitors can see first-hand how 5G technology enables the vehicle to move forward and react to obstacles in its path, thanks to image recognition applications powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) developed by the i2CAT research center. This provides reliable and real-time high-quality images to the vehicle. In addition to this pilot, Parlem is also presenting a mobile platform featuring facial recognition AI that can ‘discover emotions’ (developed by the start-up Get Feeder) and an automatic Wi-Fi interconnection system, called Wipass, that does not require a password.

Parlem showed these three technologies to the institutional delegation from the Generalitat de Catalunya who visited their stand this afternoon. The president, Pere Aragonès, and included councillors Laura Vilagrà and Roger Torrent as well as the vice-president of the Parliament, Alba Vergés, led the delegation.
